Youth Empowerment
At Langs, we believe in empowering youth through active engagement, providing them with the tools and support they need to thrive. Our Youth Wellness Hub (YWH), located on the second floor of Langs, is a testament to this commitment. Serving individuals from Grades 6-12 and young adults up to age 24, the YWH offers a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space in Cambridge.
The YWH is home to a variety of programs designed to cater to the diverse needs of our youth community. Some of these include:
STEAM and Makerspace Programs
- Youth engage in activities that enhance life skills, technical abilities, and self-expression
- Programs foster creativity and critical thinking, preparing participants for future challenges
Mental Health Services
- The YWH provides access to mental health services
- Youth can receive support tailored to their unique needs, ensuring they have the resources to navigate life's challenges.
Employment Services
- Connections to employment services are available, offering guidance and resources to help youth achieve their career aspirations
Empowerment Through Engagement
Central to our philosophy is the belief that youth engagement leads to empowerment. Youth were involved in creating the physical YWH space. They chose the décor, colours, logo, and were integral to creating a technology-free space called the Makerspace. Staff in the YWH help build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of community by involving young individuals in programs that interest them. The YWH collaborates with several partners, including Cambridge Career Connections, Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region, House of Friendship, Starling Community Services, and YMCA - Settlement Services, to provide a holistic approach to youth development. There is also the opportunity for youth to join the YTCYC Youth Council. This group plans events and programs while evaluating the YWH monthly.
One participant shared their experience: "Attending programs at the Youth Wellness Hub has been transformative," one youth shared, “There are so many different events and programs I can do...I like it because of the support of the staff.”
